Ursula's Alcove: Yarn

Ursula's Alcove offers the following selection of yarns. It is recommended that you see these yarns in person as color monitors do not give an accurate color. Please note that dye lots will also vary. We find it best if you see us at an event. However, yarn cards are available by request, depending on demand. Email us your name, snail mail address and yarn type. We will do our best to get you a yarn sample card.

Organic Yarns

Jaggerspun has introduced organic yarn, meeting the Oregon standard for certification. There are 36 wonderful colors available in 3/8 thickness (Sport Weight). Check out the "Green Line" color card for a rainbow of goodness! A one pound cone has approximately 1490 yards and goes for $ 54.00 US. Four ounce skeins have approximately 372 yards and sell for $ 22.00 US.

Jaggerspun Heather

Heather 100 % wool yarn is top-dyed worsted spun medium grade yarn. Medium grade means it is not as soft as a fine or superfine grade but it's not sandpaper either, making it more economical. Worsted spun means that all the tips of the fiber are going in the same direction for a stronger, less stretchy yarn. Ursula's Alcove carrys it in the 2/8 (approximately 2240 yards per pound) and 3/8 (approx 1490 ypp) thicknesses. Both sizes weave and knit nicely. Heather is a fingering weight yarn which knits up on US size 1 to 3 needles at a gauge of 7 to 9 stitches. The sett for weaving is 12 dpi for the 2/8 size and 10 dpi for the 3/8 size. Heather is also great for knitted, felted projects when using multiple strands. Ursula uses it in all her knitted felted hat designs. A one pound cone is $40.00. 2 oz. balls are $6.75 ea. Jaggerspun Zephyr

Zephyr is a blend of 50% Merino Wool and 50% Chinese Tussah Silk. It is available in two sizes: 2/18 at approximately 5040 yards per pound and in a 4/8 size at approx 1120 ypp. This yarn has an amazing number of uses. It knits up nicely, weaves, card-weaves, felts, finger braids, crochets, and so much more. Note that due to the dye adhering differently to the wool versus the silk, it is recommended that this be dry cleaned only. Cost is $6.50 per one ounce ball (315 yds). The 4/8 is $20 per 4 oz skein (280 yds). One pound cones of either size are $79.00. For colors available, Click Here.

Jaggerspun Super Lamb

Super Lamb is made from 100 % Superwash Merino Lambs Wool. Yes, washable wool! It comes in a fine 2/24 size which is approximately 5960 yards per pound. One ounce balls are $5.50 ea. A one pound cone is $52.00. For colors available, Click Here.

Nomad Bactrian Camel

This soft camel yarn is raised by Mongolian herders in the traditional way. Communities migrate, living in different summer and winter locations in the traditional ger. The yarn is handspun on drop spindles and supported spindles. Camel is great for weaving, knitting, and felting. It is available in single ply and double ply. The yarn is available the natural brown color and occaisionally in a creamy white. Click on the Camel page for more information. Unfortunately, transportation costs to America are rather high. At present, Camel is $21 for a 50 gram (1.75 oz) skein, $42 for a 100 g (3.5 oz) bundle of skeins, $176 for a 400 g bundle of skeins, and $210 for a 500 g bundle of skeins. Skein sizes vary. Genereally, 2 ply yarn is 86 meters per 100 grams (27 - 30 yds per oz). Single ply is roughly 40 - 42 yds an ounce. Single ply has a Z twist and is slightly overspun, making it great for naalbinding. Care: Hand wash or dry clean.

Normandy Linen

This linen is imported wet spun line flax from France and Belgium. It is great for weaving, making cord, and the finer thread is good for sewing. See Color Card for sizes and colors. Prices may vary without warning due to the currency exchange rate. At present, Normandy linen is $5.25 an ounce or $50 a cone (approx 0.9 lbs) for Bleached Ivory and Natural Gray. Black is only available in the 16/4 size. Black linen is $12 for a 2 oz. ball or $60 for a one pound cone.
